I started building websites about 3 years ago. My first one was a catastrophe to say the least. I used a free service that did not allow any type of SEO and the domain was a sub of the service providers. Now I know that any traffic I did get just helped them. Developing your own site, content, SEO, and domain are crucial to success.
I do not know everything about it now, just a lot more than I used to. It takes a lot of reading, searching, and screwing up to be able to develop a decent site that will actually draw in traffic. I would suggest that you do a lot of google searching and reading on how to make a good website. You do not have to know scripts, html, or other technical data to build a good website. You just need to know what to input in to these pages to attract indexing spiders and people.
Most hosting providers offer a easy web design service that allows you to pick a template and input content. Also, you can edit the html (when you learn it) to benefit you in the SEO department. You do need a unique domain name that is relevant to the content, title, and other meta tags.
My directory, for instance, http://www.freelinkposting.com, takes on that approach. I want people that are searching for places to get free back links to be able to find me. I have a domain that matches the title, that matches the content, that matches the search terms.
Once you have decided on a template, domain, hosting provider, and content, you have a website. Now you need to start building your web presence. You need to submit your website to google, yahoo, and other search engines. Then, I suggest adding your website to directories to get back links. You might want to consider paid advertising depending on your target market. Google adwords, yahoo PPC, and other providers offer campaigns that will get you some traffic. Also, you can buy ads, banners, and links on high traffic, high pagerank websites to gain exposure.
Now that you have a basic idea of what your plan and objectives are, you need to build your network. Whether you decide to network on social sites (social bookmarking), local (business cards, or by using traditional methods like a yellow pages, you must network. I have used signatures in forums. This also adds back links. Meet people in every forum you visit, every place you go, and you will build an audience. You still have to make sure that you are offering something that will keep them coming back.
